    There's no downside as long as you can adjust your DPI to a sensible level so it's also useful in 2D like in menus and inventory management etc. Going below 1:1 will give you a smoother motion, but not necessarily more precision. Going above will however give you less precision and choppy motion. I think if you at least stay in the 1.X pixels/count range you should be fine.
