Why does the actual HFOV / VFOV not change on the calculator when switching between 16:10 stretched and 16:10 black bars when setting widescreen letterbox in game 100% changes your HFOV? 
 

 In this video you can see the HFOV changing when nothing is changed but "widescreen letterbox"

16:10 stretched and 16:10 black bars have the exact same HFOV and VFOV.

Using the widescreen letterbox option as in the video is different as it keeps the VFOV while displaying a 16:9 image on a 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars, so the horizontal FOV gets wider.

So running aspect ratio 5:4 with letterbox on would keep the 5:4 VFOV but have a 16:9 image placed on a 5:4 aspect? in game the HFOV is exactly the same regardless of aspect ratio selected.

The VFOV is always the same and is equal to the configured FOV value (in this game). The HFOV is derived based on the aspect ratio and will change accordingly.

What happens when you do letterbox on 5:4 is that the VFOV stays the same but occupies a smaller portion of the monitor, so the HFOV is extended to compensate for this.

Yeah thanks for the explanation i came to realise this after testing. 

16:10 widescreen:

They all have the same HFOV but the image gets squished vertically. Makes controlling recoil seem easier as its less spread.

Yeah, in this case it's a stretched/squished 16:9 image because the game "assumes" your monitor is the selected aspect ratio.

Would be cool if you could add a "letterbox" option to the calculator. Atm ive just been using 5:4 on the calculator and setting the FOV number till i get the same hfov as 16:9 on 5:4

You can actually achieve this by entering a 5:4 resolution and selecting 16:9 Black bars. The calculator will only compensate for the aspect ratio in the calculation if you have a difference in the monitor size for the games, so just use the same monitor size and this should work:

Oh this is great. No more trying to do multiple different calculations lol. 

On another note why is there no vertical hipfire conversion? only horizontal. Is it because the game for some reason gives you the option to change Vertical and Horizontal sens to different numbers.

Do you mean in the conversion setup?

If so you can select between a scale (all vertical a percentage of the horizontal) or a custom dedicated conversion in the Y sensitivity option:

If you select Custom you will get a separate option for vertical:

tbf while this option is great it is somewhat dependent on dev support .

if i were to use different x and y values id likely use either raw accel or my mouses internal x and y axis dpi feature to change one axis since those aren't affected when a game doesn't support x and y axis modification.

Indeed. It's not a much used function since the majority prefers 1:1 anyway, but I added it so the calculator can replicate anything you can (potentially) set in a game.

worked well back when some games had different x and y axis defaults ,think arc used to be that way wasnt it
