"Faux" FOV Change from First Person to Third Person When the Camera is Moved A Distance Back

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I know we've gone over this and the overall consensus is that the FOV doesnt change. However, I purposely played in first person today on H1 to compare. My viewspeed calculated sensitivities feel correct in third person, but incorrect in third person. Something HAS to happen when you switch to third person. It may not change the config FOV, but that camera panning increases what you see, theres no disputing that. That "faux" FOV that you observe in third person is what we should be using when calculating viewspeed in third person games. So, if the only variable changing is the distance of the camera, surely there has to be an equation we can use to get that "faux" fov given the config FOV and the distance increase from first to third person. I'm going to ask the developers at Daybreak (H1Z1) to give me the value, or scalar, of the distance increase from first to third person, but I dont know what formula I would plug that into to get the new FOV. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

The "problem" with 3rd person is that the perceived sensitivity depends on how far away your target is.

If your target is far away, like 500 meters or more, the Monitor Distance is pretty much the same as in 1st person (assuming the FOV is the same), regardless of how far back the camera is from you character.

But if your target is right in front of you (like a couple of meters), the distance increases up to at least 150% when the camera is like the PUBG 3rd person view.

So if your encounters are mostly close quarters, 3rd person will feel a lot slower than 1st person.

Even if you have the exact distance between the camera and the character, it still depends on the distance to the target.

Im getting information right now from camera designers. It does sound like the fov might not be the issue, apparently there is a sensitivity scaler on ADS in h1 and that may be causing the issues.  Distance from classic camera in hipfire is 1.67 meters,  distance in ads is 1.1 meters.

Hmm, so the complaints about H1Z1's third and first person feeling different, regardless of zero fov change, is because they change the sensitivity? Wouldn't that have been picked up by DPI Wizard?

It depends on if he tested with every weapon or not. It appears to deviate based on the weapon you ADS with.

I have only tested AR and pistol IIRC, and they were identical. The 360 distance is about 1.776x that of hipfire/normal sensitivity, and is the same for 1st and 3rd person.

But I think he is referring to the FOV scalar, which I have measured close to 1.11. I have it a bit lower and not as a flat modifier. It probably is though, it's just really hard to measure in this game.

Fov scalar from ads to hipfire? Or first to third person? Here is the entirety of our conversation. I could ask more questions if you have any that would help with solving the third person problem.
